Risks and Limitations

Possible adverse events and complications. Most patients experience only temporary discomfort, tenderness or bruising at the treatment site. Depending on the procedure, other possible effects include transient numbness or muscle weakness, dizziness during or shortly after the procedure, and short-term worsening of pain before improvement. Less common complications include bleeding or haematoma, infection, injury to a nerve or adjacent structure, allergic reaction, and, in procedures performed near the chest wall, air entering the space around the lung. Ablation procedures carry additional risks such as skin or soft tissue injury from heat or cold, and, when bone is treated, a small risk of fracture or of cement moving outside the treated area. Serious complications are uncommon, and most complications that do occur are treatable.

Radiation. Procedures guided by CT or fluoroscopy involve exposure to ionising radiation. The dose is kept as low as reasonably achievable, every procedure is individually justified, and ultrasound or MRI guidance is used when it is suitable for the task. Radiation-guided procedures are generally avoided during pregnancy.

Results are not guaranteed. All treatments are tailored according to patient's individual needs and selected based on the current disease status. We always aim for the best possible results. However, outcomes may be partial, and in some patients they are temporary or do not occur at all. Some treatments are repeated, and some patients benefit more from other forms of care.

Not suitable for everyone. Image-guided procedures may not be appropriate if you have an active infection, a bleeding tendency or anticoagulant medication that cannot be safely adjusted, an allergy to medicines used during the procedure, anatomy that does not allow safe access, or a condition unlikely to respond to a targeted treatment. Suitability is always assessed individually, together with your imaging, symptoms and previous treatments. Please tell us about all your medications, particularly blood thinners, and about any allergies.
