Advancing Image-Guided Medicine Through Experience, Innovation and Precision

Nordic Focal Therapies was founded by Risto Kesävuori, MD, PhD, and Gaber Komar, MD, PhD, Adjunct Professor—two highly experienced interventional radiologists with long-standing careers at Finnish university hospitals.

Over the years, they have developed extensive expertise in image-guided minimally invasive procedures, including both percutaneous and endovascular interventions. Their clinical practice encompasses a broad spectrum of oncological and vascular treatments.

In addition to their clinical work, they have contributed to numerous scientific research projects and have been instrumental in introducing several advanced image-guided treatment techniques to Finland. As active members of national and international interventional radiology societies and professional networks, they remain at the forefront of developments in minimally invasive medicine, bringing the latest evidence-based therapies to their patients.

Nordic Focal Therapies currently provides services in Helsinki, Finland in close cooperation with Docrates Mehiläinen and Sydänkeskus Helsinki. We offer consultations in-person or remotely.

Our Mission

We strongly believe in minimally invasive image-guided treatments. We believe that personalised, safe, and effective local therapies can positively impact patients’ outcomes and quality of life. We aim to provide advanced treatments as part of a multidisciplinary, personalised care pathway where the patient remains at the centre of everything we do.

Risto Kesävuori

Consultant in Radiology & Interventional Radiologist

  • European Board of Interventional Radiology (EBIR), 2024

  • Board-Certified Specialist in Radiology, University of Helsinki, 2022

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD, PhD), University of Helsinki, 2019

  • Licentiate of Medicine (MD), University of Helsinki, 2014

I am an Interventional Radiologist and Consultant Radiologist specialising in image-guided minimally invasive procedures, including tumor ablation therapies and image-guided biopsies of various organs. My particular area of expertise is focal tumor ablation, including cryoablation and microwave ablation, which can be used to treat both malignant and selected benign tumors.

I hold the European Board of Interventional Radiology (EBIR) certification, an internationally recognised qualification demonstrating advanced expertise in image-guided minimally invasive procedures.

My goal is to provide patients with access to the latest minimally invasive treatments and advanced diagnostic procedures through close collaboration with oncologists and other cancer specialists. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team allows us to develop the most appropriate and personalised diagnostic and treatment plan for each patient.

I have more than 10 years of experience in image-guided minimally invasive procedures, preceded by several years as a cancer imaging researcher in the fields of radiology and nuclear medicine. My expertise encompasses diagnostic, therapeutic, and palliative image-guided interventions.

My diagnostic practice includes ultrasound- and CT-guided biopsies of both superficial and deep-seated tissues, including the lungs, liver, kidneys, and pancreas. My therapeutic expertise includes minimally invasive focal treatments such as microwave ablation and cryoablation, as well as catheter-based therapies including transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) and radioembolization (TARE).

I work closely with multidisciplinary cancer specialists — including oncologists, urologists, gynecologists, gastrointestinal surgeons, and pulmonologists — to ensure that each patient receives the most appropriate treatment at every stage of their care.
